Wow! A 20 year mystery finally (mostly) solved! Thanks so much, it's awesome to see another one just like mine. I wonder what the odds are of finding out the rest of the story? The advertisement says they have Floyd Rose bridges, ours have the Wonderba...

The "best"? Hard to tell. I'm not even certain what you mean by "superstrat"; there's great h-s-h guitars out there, & it's easy to put a dual-coil bridge pickup into an s-s-s. And are you looking for "an '80s style" guitar or one actually from ...

If the bridge is too narrow, no big thing, the strings sit further inside from the neck edges. In the bottom twelve frets, you'll never notice the difference.

If it's too wide, then one or both of the outside strings might pull off more easily -- again...

Not so fast. You can't determine origins just from a serial with no pics. And all the four digit serials I've seen were on Korean models.

Actually I stand corrected.... I made a typo....it is more than likely a 1988, not an 89.

The J-6 first year of production was 1988.  Whether those were made in Japan, or possibly Samick Korea at that point is up for debate, however most say that the...

Samick didn't start using the S prefix until 1992. And Matsumoku went under in 1987, so anything after that is not Japanese unless they switched to a different factory for a year or two, which I'd say is unlikely. You also see Samick's trademark extra-...

Also, I'm going to say Korean production started as early as 1985. There are G Series models with Samick's serial format going back that far. And on this '86, you'll notice the routing for the Sharktooth inlays are too big at their points, a common sig...

Thanks tony. For reference for others who might be having the same problem i have.

I went and did some manual string space widening. 2-6/8 spacing puts the (5 string with high C) E and C strings at 1/8 from the edge of the board at the 12th and 1/16 a...

So, I picked up a nice PXL 10 in the quilted wine burst, gorgeous guitar by the way, online. It's in excellent, nearly unplayed looking condition. Once I got it in the mail, I noticed that while the catalog and all the reviews mention it has coil split...

Yes, I think it's very likely. Mats closed in 1987 but it's likely manufacturers were already switching to Korea before that, which caused their closure.

I'll trust your word on the early 80s Japanese models. That bridge is certainly a unique feature I...

And I should add that the J6 was most likely the same story. Samick has extensive experience with Jazzboxes. They also built the Aria Pro II FA-70 at that time.
